Our latest newsletter is out with important news from Olga. You can read it HERE!

We will be performing one last concert in 2016 at the Foss Home for a New Years party. That makes 23 performances in retirement, memory and long term care facilities in the Greater Seattle area. We could not have done this without your support and we are so grateful for that support. We hope you will consider making a year-end gift, large or small, to Salish Sea Players–it’s tax deductible and safe to donate online through our Shunpike portal.

Simple Gifts of Music

Salish Sea Players LogoIt’s the start of the 2016 year end drive! Can’t quite believe it’s that time again. I hope you’ll click on the link to read the newsletter about my fun time arranging hymns to play for our concerts.  Here’s a snippet:

…I decided to try and make the hymns work for us. I PlayfordDivisionViolin 1685chose to use Playford’s Division Violin (1685) as my inspiration.

I chose four hymns: “Simple Gifts,” “Holy Holy Holy,” “Amazing Grace,” and “To be a Pilgrim.” I found simple chord progressions and scores on the internet. Now, I am definitely NOT a composer but…

Happy New Year!!

Salish Sea Players LogoThank you to all of our supporters who’ve given so generously to our 2015 Year End fund drive!! (It’s not too late to donate and receive a tax receipt for 2015!) And, today, those funds were working to bring live music and personal interaction to the residents of the Memory Care unit at Quail Park of Lynnwood!!Linda and Olga, Quail Park Carol singing

It was a festive concert; beautiful decorations with purple highlights adorned the room. Olga and I prepared a duo concert of Telemann, Bach, Mazas, some Bartók (totally cool on gut strings!), a Finnish folk tune (by request), and ended with some Christmas Carols. We asked the audience to sing with us and handed out the lyrics. I was so touched by their singing that I teared up during Silent Night. Their voices got stronger and fuller as we went—Deck the Halls, then Jingle Bells. We ended gently again with Auld Lang Syne. I think they should start a choir!

We perform for the Quail Park residents almost every month—Christine, the Activities Director, is a big believer in the therapeutic power of music, but especially live music. She and Salish Sea Players have worked together since 2012; when she changed venues after a maternity leave she sought us out to bring us to Quail Park. We’ve gotten to know some of the people there—I’ll just mention two. Cora, whose expressive hands move along with the music as we play. Today, she and I sang “We wish you a Merry Christmas”; Elsebeth, a former recorder player and member of Early Music groups from Milkwaukee—today she was joined by her family who share in her love of early music.

Thanks again for considering donating to the Salish Sea Players. A gift from you, small or large, helps us continue to give the gift of music to retirement and long-term care facilities of the Greater Seattle area. Donating on-line is easy and safe to do. If you’d rather send a check here’s the link for more information.

Happy New Year!

Hot Days of Summer 2015

August 13, 201Salish Sea Players Logo5

Our latest newsletter is out and you can read it here:  http://p0.vresp.com/5MtuRM

We performed 10 concerts in July, 7 duo and 3 trio concerts. We’ve never done that many in one month. It was fun and memorable.

One memory is of performing for Columbia Lutheran Home. I am always struck bLinda, Olga, Laura--Salish Sea Playersy the atmosphere when I enter the building–there is a sense of joy in the air. The audience was very involved from the very beginning, even before the concert started. Comments about the programs I was handing out, what did our name mean, how long have we been doing this. Once the concert started the questions kept right on coming–about the music, about the instruments, and about us. After the show  people lingered for a very long time to talk with us and each other. I loved the energy, the enthusiasm! What a fun performance, and I can’t wait to return to Columbia Lutheran!

Music of the Heart

Salish Sea Players LogoJanuary 29, 2015: We played two concerts today at the Foss Home. One concert was for the cottages, an assisted living area that feels like a little village. The courtyard is where they hold their annual Farmers Market. After that show we moved to a memory care unit. I found this day of concerts to be moving and again, a confirmation of how important it is to continue presenting these concerts.

The concert in the cottage was a very cheerful crowd. Questions kept flying at us (which we love) during the whole show. A lot of laughter and exuberant applause. At the end of the concert we received one of the nicest comments: “Coming to this concert was like being Foss Home Logoinvited to the most wonderful party.” It did feel like a party!

We moved to the memory care unit for our next concert. We perform for this unit a lot and we get to recognizing many of the residents. One in particular has caught my eye on the last several visits. This resident is basically non-verbal—I’ve approached her every time we visit and she looks at me like she’s not sure who or what I am. But I have been convinced that she was participating in her own way. This concert she wheeled herself very close to us and I observed her squeezing her eyes closed with a great intensity. After the concert I asked her if she liked the music and at first it was that ‘who are you’ loMusic of the Heart-Foss Home Logook –but then she nodded YES! The Activities Director and I were surprised, happily. I asked her another question about the music and she suddenly flashed us a brilliant smile—it made my knees weak.

I learned that day that the Foss memory care unit is going to participate in the individual ipod project and that several of the residents, including the resident that flashed us the smile, are in line to receive one of the ipods! You may have heard of this sort of thing from the movie “Alive Inside.” The Foss Home calls their project “Music of the Heart” and they are looking for donations of ipods, cds, and itunes gift cards.
